한국국제교류재단(Korea Foundation, KF)과 주한네덜란드대사관은 한-네덜란드 수교 60주년을 기념하여 2021년 6월 23일부터 8월 13일까지 <변덕스러운 부피와 두께–네덜란드 최고의 책 디자인 한국의 아티스트북을 만나다>전을 KF갤러리와 KF웹사이트에서 온오프라인으로 개최한다.
그래픽 디자인 강국 네덜란드에서 1926년부터 이어져온 ‘네덜란드 최고의 책 디자인 어워드’는 유럽에서 가장 오래되고 권위 있는 상으로, 인류의 가장 오래된 문화 유산 중 하나인 책이 사양길로 접어드는 현 시대에 책의 전문성과 예술성을 인정하고 전문가와 종사자들을 장려하는 뜻 깊은 상이다.
동 전시에서는 높은 경쟁률을 뚫고 2019년 네덜란드 최고의 책 디자인으로 선정된 도서 33권과 한국의 아티스트북 17권을 함께 선보인다. 전시명인 ‘변덕스러운 부피와 두께’는 전시에 출품된 책 50권의 다양성과 예술적 가치를 상징하는 동시에 ‘책’을 둘러싼 기존의 보수적 인식에 관한 도전의 의미를 갖는다. 한국의 협력 큐레이터 조숙현(아트북프레스 대표)이 선별한 국내 아티스트북 17권은 일반적인 아트북이나 도록과 달리 예술가들이 자신의 예술 세계를 책을 통해 구현한 작품들로 뛰어난 개성과 완성도를 보여준다.
네덜란드의 그래픽 디자이너 ‘팀 써스데이’는 33권의 책을 진열할 수 있는 아코디언 테이블과 전시 전반의 그래픽 디자인을 담당해 전시의 구성도를 높였다. 한국 아티스트 ‘로와정’은 책들의 각기 다른 사이즈와 개성에 맞춘 특수한 책꽂이와 도서관의 북 카트를 연상시키는 벤치를 제작해 전시에 입체감을 더했고, ‘김경태’는 책 디자인을 다각도적으로 고찰할 수 있는 사진 작업을 선보이며 새로운 관점을 제시한다.
한-네덜란드 예술 전문가들의 협력으로 이루어지는 동 전시는 올해로 수교 60주년을 맞는 양국 간 문화 교류를 한층 깊어지게 하는 기회를 제공할 것이다. 더불어 독서 애호가를 비롯한 그래픽 디자이너 책 제작자, 그리고 책에 특별한 애정을 가지고 있는 예술가들의 갈증을 해소하고 책에 관한 새로운 시각과 호기심을 일깨우는 특별한 경험을 선사하고자 한다.
The Korea Foundation, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Korea, host the Versatile Volumes – The Best Dutch Book Designs Meet Korean Artists’ Books exhibition from June 23 to August 13, 2021. The exhibition commemorates the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and the Republic of Korea. Audiences are able to enjoy this exhibition both in person at the KF Gallery and virtually via the KF’s website.
The Best Dutch Book Designs is an award bestowed each year to 33 selected books in the Netherlands, a country considered to be a powerhouse of graphic design. First bestowed in 1926, the award is one of the oldest and most prestigious in Europe. While books are one of the oldest forms of human cultural heritage, the book-reading culture is rapidly declining. At this juncture, The Best Dutch Book Designs award offers a way of promoting diversity and artistry in books and encouraging experts and professionals working in the field.
The exhibition features the 33 Best Dutch Book Designs of 2019 – books that managed to overcome the intense competition – exhibited alongside 17 artists’ books from Korea. Versatile Volumes, the title of this exhibition, not only symbolizes the diversity and artistry of the 50 books presented in the exhibition but is also a challenge to conservative perceptions of books as a medium. Collaborating with Korean curator and Art Book Press president Cho Sookhyun, the selected 17 Korean artists’ books, unlike art books or catalogues, are publications in which artists render their own artistic vision in book form. For the sake of this exhibition, the selections are books by domestic artists that boast superb artistry and distinctiveness.
The event’s design as an art book exhibition has been enhanced with the participation of the Dutch graphic designer studio Team Thursday, and the Korean artists RohwaJeong and Kyoungtae Kim, who contribute works of art furniture and graphic design. Team Thursday designed an accordion table to be used for displaying the 33 books, while also providing graphic designs for the exhibition as a whole. RohwaJeong produced special bookcases to suit the different sizes and characteristics of the art books, as well as a bench that calls to mind the sort of book carts found in libraries. Kyoungtae Kim displays photographic works of book designs from various angles, presenting new perspectives.
This collaborative exhibition with art professionals from the Netherlands and Korea serves as an opportunity to deepen cultural exchanges between the two countries commemorating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Moreover, Versatile Volumes hopes to quench the thirsts of bookworms, graphic designers, book makers, and artists with a special affection for books – generating new perspectives and curiosity toward books.
