전에도 소개한 적이 있는 쿠퍼휴잇은 워싱턴에 소재한 스미스소니언 박물관을 구성하는 여럿중 유일하게 뉴욕에 위치한 디자인 뮤지엄으로 91가와 5애비뉴에 센트럴 파크 동쪽에 위치하고 있다. 이 곳에서는10월 19일에서 25일까지 내셔녈 디자인 주간이라서 이 기간 동안에 상을 받은 디자이너들이 패녈로 나와 강연도 하고 그 외 여러 강연들과 애프터 파티 등등의 이벤트들을 하고 있다. 또 한 이 기간 동안에 뮤지엄 입장이 무료이다.
지금은 Wall Stories: Children’s Wallpapers and Books, Housing Proud: Nineteenth Century Watercolor Interior from the Thaw Collection, Solos: Tulou/Affordable Housing for China 그리고 /curators Select: Recent Acquisitions, 2003-2008 이렇게 4개의 전시가 소개되고있는데 그 중에 Wall Stories: Children’s Wallpapers and Books, Housing Proud 전시를 소개하려고 합니다.
아이들에게 오랫동안 인기있고 사랑을 받아온 신데렐라, 피터래빗, 뽀빠이, 미키마우스와 구피, 푸우, 이상한 나라의 앨리스, 피터팬 그리고 피노키오등의 다양한 캐릭터들로 디자인 된 책, 월페이퍼 등을 이 전시에서 만나볼 수 있다. 쿠퍼휴잇은 벽커버링 파트에 미국에서 가장 크게 17세기에서 21세기 사이의 만여점이 넘는 콜렉션을 구비하고 있다.
19세기에 사회적, 경제적변화로 인해 아이들을 위한 책과 벽지의 인기가 높아졌다. 공공교육, 아동복지기관, 아동근로법, 새로이 전문적으로 생긴 소아과등의 신설은 아이들의 어린시절이 인생에 있어 얼마나 중요한지에 대해서 사람들이 인식하기 시작하는데 발판이 되었다. 산업혁명 이후 부유한 중산층들이 생겨나고 넓은 집에 살기 시작하면서 아이들은 자신만의 독립된 방을 가지게 되는 경우가 늘어났다. 그러면서 아이들 방을 꾸미고자 하는 부모들의 수요에 따라 재능있는 작가들과 일러스트레이터들은 발달된 인쇄기술을 이용하여 아이들을 위한 책과 벽지를 만들어내게 되었다.
이 전시에서는 이런 현상의 결과물들인 다양한 책과 벽지들을 볼 수 있다.
