최근 한국에서 대선과 함께 정치에 관심이 뜨겁습니다.

미국에서도 트럼프 대통령 당선 이후 많은 이슈가 있는데요, 전임 대통령이었던 오바마와 관련된 공간 소식을 전해드립니다.

지난 5월 초, 2014년 공모하고, Tod Williams + Billie Tsien 가 선정된 Obama Presidential Museum & Library에 대한 계획안이 Obama 전 대통령 본인의 발표로 공개되었습니다.

‘The Center’, ‘an ongoing project where we will shape, together, what it means to be a good citizen in the 21st century’. 라는 The Obama Presidential Center 계획은 2021년 시카고 동부 Jackson Park 재개발 사업과 함께 완공 될 예정입니다.

지수로 표현될 이야기(특히 기존 자연을 보호하고, 어떤 설비가 들어오고, 모양이 중국 전통 도시락통을 닮았다는 평가 등)는 계획단계에서 변경 가능한 부분이므로 배제하고, 어떻게 공간을 채워 나갈 계획인지에 대해서 이야기 해보겠습니다.

박물관과 도서관, 그리고 커뮤니티 포럼 빌딩을 중심으로 이루어질 이 개발계획은, 처음부터 끝까지 명확한 이야기를 전달하고있습니다.

먼저 박물관은 오바마 전 대통령과 미셸 전 영부인의 만남에서부터 비롯된 투쟁과 극복의 과정의이야기를 담을 예정입니다.

그리고 도서관은 그 과정에서 생산 혹은 연관된 비공식적이거나 공식적인 문서들을 중심으로 구성될 예정입니다.

또한 포럼에서는 지역사회와 외부인들, 각각 혹은 서로가 교류하며 소통하는 공간으로 계획될 예정입니다.

단순하게 보면 별반 다를 것이 없는 공간 구성 계획일지도 모르겠지만, 아래의 이야기들을 보면, 21세기의 미래로 나아가는 시민사회를 위해 수동적이지 않고 소통하는 공간을 추구하며, 두 분이 부부로 살아가며 스스로의 원칙에 따라서 맞이하는 위기 혹은 갈등을 어떻게 극복해왔는지에 대한 이야기가 박물관과 도서관에서 증명되고, 그것을 포럼건물에서 익히는 과정을 공간 프로그램으로 삼고있습니다.

Sun-Times, "a complex of modern buildings along Stony Island Avenue—a library, museum and event center, plus a community garden, a children's play area and potentially an athletic field."

Former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, "Create something for the future, something that looked forward, not backwards.”

The Obama Foundation, "Living, working center for engagement — an ongoing project for the community and world to shape what it means to be an active citizen in the 21st century."

"The Obamas want to create a safe, warm, inviting place that brings people in, teaches them something new, and inspires them to create change in their own communities," said Obama Foundation Chair Marty Nesbitt. "The Center will be a place for doing, not just looking or listening.”

"Strengthen the economic climate of the community by bringing hundreds of thousands of visitors to the South Side every year, creating new jobs and opportunities on the South Side, and revitalizing historic Jackson Park," according to a release.”

이 프로젝트의 메인 건축가인 Billie Tsien에 따르면, 전 대통령 부부는 이 프로젝트에 대해 이해를 바탕으로 기존의 수동적인 이용객을 바탕으로 한 공간 구성설계 유형에 비추어 "Too quiet." 라 표현하고, 이번 발표하는 공간 계획이 지난 설계공모를 넘어 발전된 계획이라고 말했습니다.

명확한 공간의 목적이, 클라이언트의 안목을 만났을 때, 어떤 결과물로 완성될지 벌써부터 기대가 됩니다.
