이달 초, 4월 5일 뉴욕 허드슨 야드에서 헤더윅 스튜디오의 베젤에 이어 Diller
Scofidio + Renfro와 Rockwell Group이 협업한 The Shed가 공식 개관했습니다. 처음 이 컨셉이 발표된 2016년, 건물이 움직이는, 정확히 구조를 가진 외피를 움직이는 이 컨셉의 의미 혹은 실현 가능성에 많은 사람들이 의견을 쏟아냈지만, 결국 완성 되었고, 개관기념 Soundtrack of America 콘서트 시리즈를 치르며 왜 이 건물이 움직여야 했으며, 그 결과 사람들에게 주는 의미가 무엇인지 선보였습니다. 이번 리포트는 The Shed의 공간 구성에 대해 이야기 합니다.

2016년 이 건물의 구조를 가진 외피가 움직이는 계획안이 세상에 발표되었을 때, 기술적으로 문제는 없겠지만, 열고 닫는 것에대한 명확한 효용성에 대한 의문의 시선들이 많았습니다. 공간 구성 및 활용에서는 2009년 OMA와 REX가 협업한 AT&T PERFORMING ARTS CENTER DEE AND CHARLES WYLY THEATRE와 유사성이 있는데, 건축 구조체가 움직이면서 혹시나 발생 될 수 있는 사고들에대한 우려의 목소리들이 대부분이었습니다.

지난 4월 5일부터 14일까지, The Shed의 개관 기념 “Soundtrack
of America” 콘서트 시리즈를 선보이면서, 왜 이런공간이 필요했는지를 선보였습니다. 확장될 수 있는 무대가 가져다 줄 수 있는 더 다채로운 좌석들이, 공연을 즐기는 방법을 더 다양하게 해주었습니다.

또한 공간이 확장 될 필요가 없을 때에는 공공 공간으로 전환시키고, 공간이 확장되었을 때에는 더 다양한 문화 예술 활동이 선보일 수 있는 공간을 확보합니다.

건축가는 하이라인을 따라서 이 허드슨 야드가 들어서기 이전에 존재하던, 레일을 따라 움직이는 철도길에서 받은 영감을 건축적으로 표현한 것이라고 합니다. (참고로 Diller Scofidio + Renfro는 뉴욕 하이레인 설계 사무소 중 하나입니다.)

Rockwell Group이 진행한 인테리어 공간도 군더더기 없는 디자인을 자랑하지만, 건축이 사람이 사는 기계 라는 오래된 정의가 떠오르는 건축입니다. 건축 외피나, 건축 구조체 안에서 움직이는 한계를 벗어나, 건축 구조를 지닌 외피가 움직이는 세상으로 나아가는 요즘입니다.
