Multiple Choice: From Sample to Product




뉴욕 맨하탄에 위치한 쿠퍼 휴잇 뮤지엄에서는 11월 9일부터 내년 4월 6일까지 Multiple Choice: From Sample to Product이라는 주제아래 전시를 한다.

샘플 북이나 자료들을 통해 디자인, 테크놀러지와 마케팅전반에 관하여 제품이나 기술 의 여러가지 예를 눈앞에서 구체적으로 살펴볼 수 있으며 300년이 넘게 벽지, 도자와 텍스타일등의 장식미술 분야에 여러가지 디자인 대체물을 제작하고 기록하는데 쓰여왔다.

이번 전시는 큐퍼 휴잇의 콜렉션, 내셔널 디자인 뮤지엄과 스밋소니언 도서관의 방대한 셀렉션을 통해 샘플과 최종 제품의 디자인 사양과 연결관계를 엿볼 수 있다.

18세기에서 20세기에 이르기까지 특히 텍스타일 분야에서 샘플은 널리 제작되었지만 중세 예술가들의 모델북과 16, 17세기 레이스, 자수와 직조 디자인 모티프를 위한 텍스타일 패턴 책등에서 더 앞선 전례들을 찾아볼 수 있다.

샘플제작에 있어 그 방법은 여러가지가 있는데 아티스트의 장식, 패턴 아이디어나 기술적인 시도나 실험들; 제조업자들릐 품질관리 컨트롤과 재고조사의 기록; 영업을 위한 판매 샘플; 디자인 서비스나 예측 그리고 색표준화등에 쓰여져왔다.

여러가지 이유와 목적이 있지만 샘플링은 제품 제작과전, 기술혁신, 디자인 기호와 색상선호에 있어 자세한 정보를 보여준다. 제작자는 휴대하기 쉽고 시각적이며 눈앞에서 만져볼 수 있는 샘플북과 자료들을 가지고 기술과 뛰어난 디자인을 여러나라와 지역에 알린다.

현대 디자인 사회가 각 제품의 마케팅을 위해 여러가지 열린 자료들과 전자 포맷으로 바뀌어가는 시대에서 물리적 샘플은 곧 구식이 될지도 모른다. 이번 전시를 통해 과거의 여러 형태의 샘플의 디자인을 통해 앞으로 어떤 형태의 무궁무진한 샘플링 아이디어가 미래에 쓰여질 지 궁금해진다.
